I’ve struggled with acne for a long time; in fact, it’s been a source of self-consciousness for me for more than 10 years. Recently, I’ve managed to get it under control with guidance from Dija Ayodele, skin expert and author of Black Skin: The Definitive Skincare Guide. Below, four key lessons she’s taught me about keeping my acne at bay.
Streamline your skincare routine…
“Most people are using far too many products,” says Ayodele. “When you strip back your routine, you have the chance to see what actually works for you. It also gives your skin a chance to heal if you’ve compromised your skin barrier. Remember, it’s harder to treat any dermatological concern if the skin is damaged.”
… but make sure to balance actives with soothing ingredients
As a person with sensitive skin, counteracting my sometimes drying tretinoin with soothing cica, peptides and ceramides has been essential. “You want to treat the skin kindly at all times,” says Ayodele. “The constant use of harsh actives–which can sometimes be necessary for acne treatment–can cause further inflammation. You need to make sure you’re evening things out with calming, moisturising products.”
Get monthly in-person treatments
“Regular facials that incorporate chemical peels and lasers can help to get skin in better shape more quickly,” Ayodele advises. “You’ll begin to see results after about six to 12 months. Once things are more or less under control, you can come in for treatments less regularly–say every eight weeks or even three months–to keep things in check.” Sometimes, though, more intensive medical intervention may be required. “In those instances, a dermatologist will be able to prescribe you treatments such as Accutane or Spironolactone–a hormone suppressor that helps deal with oily/acneic skin conditions,” says Ayodele.
Accept that there’s no quick fix
“Everyone is different, and acne can be triggered by your lifestyle, genetics and/or environment,” Ayodele explains. “Even once you’ve got your skincare routine nailed down, it may take a little while to see results, especially if you’re in your late twenties or older, when your skin cycle has slowed down.” I know that can be frustrating to hear, but stick with your treatment–consistency is of the utmost importance–and don’t fall prey to anyone promising you an overnight solution, which might do more harm than good in the long run. “With its endless array of ‘before and after’ photos, social media makes everything seem quick and easy; it gives people false expectations about how long things will take to work. In the end, though, slow and steady will always win the race.”

“Salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are the gold standard when it comes to dealing with acne, spots and blemishes as they’re able to penetrate deeply into the pores, helping to decongest the skin,” says Ayodele. Exfoliation is also key. “You want to be able to get rid of the old skin cells sitting on the surface of the skin. Try products that contain either lactic or mandelic acid, which tends to be gentler than glycolic acid. Meanwhile, retinol can help with controlling the level of oil in the skin, and assist in speeding up the decongestion process, too.” When dealing with hyperpigmentation specifically, tyrosinase-inhibiting ingredients are your best bet. “Alpha arbutin, licorice extract, tranexamic acid, glutathione, kojic acid, resorcinol–these are all ingredients I’d be looking to include in my clients’ skincare.”

Sometimes, the most standout beauty solutions are also the simplest. Using coconut oil for hair that’s hydrated, lustrous, and flake-free may sound like too easy a fix, but for many, the naturally-occurring, fatty oil rivals even the most cultish of products. “During COVID, I started experimenting and using natural products and I was using coconut oil on my hair once a week,” says celebrity extensionist Priscilla Valles. “The hydration and shine it provides is beyond amazing.”
Applying coconut oil to tired strands makes sense. The oil is derived from the raw, mature coconuts and is comprised of 100%, predominantly unsaturated fat. Coconut oil’s fatty acids (principally lauric acid) that can lend to hair health when employed correctly. There are of course caveats and limits to what coconut oil can offer, but its all-natural status and the affordability factor make testing the treatment for yourself entirely worthwhile—especially for those whose lengths have been looking lackluster. “Coconut oil has benefits for all hair types, but is best used on dry, damaged, or color-treated hair to lock in moisture and prevent breakage,” says celebrity hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons.

What Are the Benefits of Coconut Oil for Hair?
For fans of natural products and ingredients, coconut oil is close to magic. The oil is commonly used topically to moisturize skin and calm dermatitis, swished around the mouth to the benefit of gums and teeth, and is easily incorporated into a healthy diet. And, of course, the efficacious oil’s mane benefits are myriad.
“Coconut oil is a great ingredient to implement into your hair routine because it has nourishing fatty acids, which help moisturize the hair, prevent breakage, and strengthen the hair,” says Fitzsimons. According to research, coconut oil actually reduces protein loss in both damaged and undamaged hair. Its makeup allows it to penetrate the hair shaft, the better to deliver hydration, leading to softer and shinier strands and enhanced texture.
In addition to boosting your mane itself, coconut oil’s moisturizing and anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties make it a scalp health hero, too. The oil helps to treat fungus and subsequent flaking in the short term, and some research says that it can help to repair the scalp’s moisture barrier over time.
And finally? “Coconut oil can also be used in your styling routine as a natural heat protectant to reduce hot tool damage,” says Fitzsimons. He’s right: coconut oil’s penetrative properties condition hair, seal the cuticle, and lock in moisture, protecting hair from potential damage that comes with your go-to dryers and irons. The oil also helps to tame frizz, resulting in sleeker, softer styles.
Can Coconut Oil Damage Hair?
Though coconut oil is cure-all for many’s hair woes, it’s not necessarily a universal, and certain application factors should be considered before you start slathering strands in the fatty oil.
“As a person with a fine texture of hair, it’s actually my arch nemesis,” says Illeisha Lussiano, hairstylist and owner of New York’s The Way. “It often causes fine hair to become brittle and break.” These undesirable results occur when coconut oil is unable to penetrate the hair, whether due to natural texture or too much of a good thing. “Be careful not to use it in excess,” cautions Fitzsimons. “Coconut oil will sit on top of your strands, which will not allow essential nutrients to penetrate the shaft and cause your hair to feel dry and brittle—the opposite effect of what you’re looking for.”
Even if breakage does not occur, coconut oil applied too liberally or sans strategy can result in hair that looks greasy and grimy rather than well-tended.
Unrefined Coconut Oil versus Refined Coconut Oil
When selecting a beauty-ready coconut oil, choosing an unrefined (or virgin) option is your best bet. Unlike refined coconut oil, a processed iteration derived from the dry kernels of the coconut, unrefined, pure coconut oil is crafted from the fruit while it’s fresh and is largely chemical-free.
Think of coconut oil as you would green juice: a cold-pressed option will be much closer to the source (and its benefits) than one made from dried, chemically-treated ingredients.
How to Apply Coconut Oil to Hair
Applying coconut oil to hair is all about finding what works best for you, a process that will likely involve some trial and error. One person’s high-shine hack may be another’s hyper-greasy hair day, so be sure to start with diminutive amounts, and allot time for potential restyling.
For most treatments, experts recommend rinsing coconut oil out post-use—though a small amount used as a styling oil offers an exception. We suggest starting with an overnight mask or scalp treatment to see how your hair responds. Here, five easy ways to start incorporating coconut oil into your mane routine.
Coconut Oil Hair Mask
Rather than relying on coconut oil as a finisher, Fitzsimons opts to use the ingredient—or products containing it—as an easy, DIY mask that works while you sleep.
“One of my favorite ways to use coconut oil is to use it as an overnight leave-in to nourish and condition dehydrated locks,” says Fitzsimons. “Take a coconut oil mask, and distribute a small, even amount throughout your hair and scalp and leave it on overnight, and rinse in the morning.” Fitzsimons recommends repeating the process once a week for strong, hydrated hair. (Pro tip: coconut oil can stain fabric, so opt for a shower cap when masking overnight.
Pre-Wash Protection
Coconut oil is also effective for pre-wash hair treatment. “Hard water and washing the hair can sometimes strip the hair from natural oils and cause dryness and breakage,” says Fitzsimons. “To avoid this, you can add a small amount of coconut oil to your hair pre-shower to avoid damage and dryness.” The oil does this by infusing and coating strands, guarding against over-absorption.
Coconut Conditioner
Though coconut oil does work in lieu of leave-in conditioner and is an effective detangler, rinsing it out eventually is a must, the better to avoid greasiness and buildup. Apply warm (aka liquified) oil to lengths post-shampoo, let sit for two hours, and wash again. The double-wash means that this process is best for those with thick, hearty strands.
Scalp Treatment
Massaging coconut oil into the scalp increases circulation, quells fungus and inflammation, and bolsters your moisture barrier. While masking or conditioning, use fingers or a scalp massager to coax the oil into the roots for a natural dry scalp and hair treatment.
For Styling
As noted above, coconut oil works well as a natural heat protectant. Additionally, a touch of coconut oil is ideal of calming frizzy hair and flyaways, increasing shine, and obscuring split ends. UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and
non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the
benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.
IOM’s Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) strategy aims to improve the quality and integrity of
programme delivery, ensure that programs are responsive to the needs of affected populations,
and meet donor requirements and standards of accountability.
The Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting Officer will work as part of the IOM Transition and
Resilience team, under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission (CoM) in Zimbabwe and
direct supervision of the Project Coordinator.
The successful candidate will support aspects of the design of tailored tools, the implementation of project monitoring, and the management of the project related to Cash Based Interventions, Protection, Livelihoods and Community Reintegration.
The incumbent performs their duties in line with IOM’s institutional M&E and Results Based Management (RBM) Guidelines.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
Collect, maintain, and conduct preliminary analyses of various project related data required
for M&E, planning and decision making within the project. Bring issues related to data integrity,
quality and consistency to the attention of the supervisor.
Provide specific technical inputs for the development and/or implementation of special
assessments, mini-evaluations, surveys, and/or operational research so as to assist with the integration of a strong reflection and learning culture during project implementation.
Participate in specific monitoring exercises as assigned and under the guidance of thes upervisor. Monitor endorsement procedures with the required endorsement entities.
Participate in specific site monitoring visits of the places of implementation under the guidance of the supervisor, and conduct preliminary analysis of data collected by the team.
Keep track of the status of project(s) indicators, assist in updating the same in PRIMA’s
Results Monitoring module and bring to the prompt attention of the Transition and Resilience
Unit (TRU) Coordinator any delays or challenges regarding compliance issues with the donor/partners requirements.

Keep abreast of internal frameworks for Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) and Results Based Management (RBM) developments to strictly comply with Processes and strategies such as the IOM global M&E strategy and Guidelines, Strategic Results
Framework (following IOM Global Vision), regional M&E planning tools and Prima-for-all standards.
Compile M&E related content as required for the drafting of concept notes and proposals for potential donors and funding opportunities in IOM’s areas of interest.
Draft specific components for the preparation of donor reports to help in supporting timely reporting and compliance with donor regulations and obligations, as well as in the report finalization process with Regional Office and/or Headquarters.
Compile and provide information on M&E methods, approaches and tools to the project
team and country office projects colleagues as may be necessary.
Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Education
Master’s degree in a social science field such as: Monitoring and Evaluation; Development or
Social Studies; International Development; Demography and Population Studies; Statistics;
Project Planning and Management; Sociology; Research Methods or a related field from an
accredited academic institution; or,
University degree in the above fields with two years of relevant professional experience.
Experience
Experience in an M&E role in an international organization such as the UN or INGOs.
Experience in compiling data and narrative reports for donor or internal management reporting.
Skills
Strong reporting, writing and research skills, preferably related to M&E;
Excellent communication and analytical skills;
Demonstratable knowledge of key concepts in M&E such as logical frameworks, results
chains, indicators, baseline, targets, assumptions and Theory of Change;
Demonstrated knowledge of development of data collection tools, their administration and
evaluation techniques and practices;

When women hit puberty or are pregnant or enter the menopause phase, they experience hormonal changes. Hormones can stimulate hair growth in various areas of the body, including the nipples.
2. Genetics
Genetic predisposition plays a significant role in determining where hair grows on the body. If your family members have nipple hair, you may be more likely to have it as well.
3.Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is a hormonal disorder that can lead to increased androgens in the body, potentially resulting in excess hair growth, including around the nipples, the expert tells Health Shots.
4. Age
As women age, they not only face hormonal changes, but may also experience changes in hair growth patterns, including the development of nipple hair.
Tips to remove hair around nipples
If you’re looking to remove hair around the nipples, it’s important to be cautious and choose methods that are gentle on the sensitive skin in this area.
Here are some options:
1. Trimming
You can use small scissors or a specialised trimmer to carefully trim the hair around your nipples to a shorter length. This is not a long-term solution, but it can help to manage the hair without removing it completely.
2. Shaving
Shaving is an option, but it’s important to be extremely gentle and use a sharp and clean razor, says the expert. Apply a moisturising shaving cream or gel to reduce skin irritation. When you shave, do it in the direction of hair growth so that you minimise the risk of ingrown hairs.
3. Tweezing
Tweezing is a method to pluck your hair one by one. It can be effective for removing hair around the nipples, but it may be time consuming, uncomfortable or even painful

4. Waxing
You can use wax strips designed for sensitive areas to remove hair. Be cautious and follow the instructions carefully to avoid excessive pulling or irritation. While waxing hair around the nipples, you need to exercise caution and follow proper techniques, especially in sensitive areas like this. It may cause discomfort or minor irritation, especially in sensitive areas. If you experience severe pain, prolonged redness, swelling or any other unusual symptoms after waxing, consult a dermatologist.
5.Depilatory creams
Some depilatory creams are formulated for sensitive areas, so you can apply a small amount of it to the hair around the nipples then gently wipe it away with a cloth or sponge. Make sure not to get them on the nipple itself and just focus on the surrounding hair.
Before trying these methods, do a patch test on a small area of skin to check for allergies or adverse reactions.
Are hairy nipples a sign of something serious?
While hair on breast is usually benign, your nipples should be checked by a doctor if you notice other symptoms too. Dr Dewan says these changes could be indicative of an underlying medical condition that needs further investigation. Here’s when to be concerned:

3. Family history
If you have a family history of breast cancer or other breast-related conditions, it will be good if you have regular check-ups and discuss any changes with a doctor.
